About Virtually Hardy

Virtually Hardy is a digital home for researchers, scholars, and inquisitive readers of English poet and novelist Thomas Hardy (1840-1928). Considerations for this project began as I wrote the acknowledgements for my dissertation (The Graduate Center, CUNY, 2020), in which I acknowledged my intellectual debt to the brilliant students of my World Humanities 102 course at CCNY, and particularly Alex Rao, who brought my attention to the complicated publication history of Tess of the d’Urbervilles from which a chapter was born. I imagine this as a provisional and collaborative space which I hope will provide for similarly generative revelations regarding Hardy’s work. In this spirit the site will continue to grow with the contributions of undergraduate and graduate students and will also make space for open-access scholarship.
